Shaft
From World Leader in Underground Blast Design Software
A vertical or inclined underground opening through which a mine is worked. A shaft provides access to the underground drifts and stopes, using a method of conveyance called a cage. Ore is transported to the surface using ore carriers called 'skips' which are also located in the shaft.
